Ryan DaWalt composes paintings with his fingers, sprinkling colored steel particulate onto pieces of linen fixed to magnetic plates. He considers these paintings improvisations that use science as a general guide, revealing their origins with the lines that trace the magnetic fields’ courses through the composition. DaWalt attempts to create optical experiences through the use of overlapping and intersecting geometric figures, mainly squares and triangles, citing Kasimir Malevich and Stan Brakhage as major influences.
