Watercolor on handmade paper
1986 Stuttgart, Germany
In the field of tension between models such as August Macke, Asger Jorn, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Henri Matisse and his very own avant-garde, Mathias Baumann reinvented watercolor for himself: his small-format sheets come across as color-intensive narratives - surface and space in dialogue. Painterly cosms meet, which due to their bipolar nature result in a pulsating interplay.
Color playfulness - lost in itself - on the other hand clarity. Fine lines, wax surfaces, superimposing color. And always the love for detail. Conceptual paintings, developed from an inner impulse, following a thought that is brought to life in composition and color. Walls and doors, walls and hurdles are always in focus. Alienated from the object, they not only open up dimensions for interpretation, they also take the viewer by the hand and lead him into deep pictorial worlds.
