1979 Hull, United Kingdom
Multidisciplinary artist Richie Culver (b. 1979, Hull, UK) draws from his early life in Northern Britain to create a distinctive iconography filled with rudimentary forms inspired by personal observation—including local dog races, barbershop scenes, and even photographic images of Princess Diana—as well as quotes from friends. Culver’s crudely rendered, punk-inspired illustrations and paintings address the sociopolitical divisions between the Northern and Southern sections of the United Kingdom. In his first solo exhibition, “No One Knows Me Like Dawn From The Job Centre” (2018), Culver’s work spoke to post-Brexit life. His later works have become more minimal and abstract, and he has expanded his oeuvre beyond photography and painting to include sculpture and a line of clothing with Topshop. His works can be found in the Tate Modern and have been collected by Soho House and British singer Adele.
