1973 Carpentras, France

Ronan Barrot, born in 1973, is a painter. He entered the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1991 and graduated in 1997 with honours. In 2001, the Trafic gallery discovered his work and organised his first solo exhibition, "Cataracts". In 2006, he exhibited his paintings at the Marc Chagall Museum in Nice. Since 2007, the Claude Bernard Gallery has represented him. The gallery has given him numerous group and solo exhibitions and has presented his work at numerous events (FIAC, BRAFA, ArtParis) and in other galleries. Many of his works, which are already in important private collections in France and abroad, are now in those of national museums: Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de la Ville de Strasbourg, Fondation MAEGHT in Saint Paul de Vence, FRAC Île-de-France-Le Plateau, FRAC Auvergne, etc.

Ronan Barrot acknowledges some deep influences: among others, Goya and Courbet, from whom he derives his material, his light, his play of reinvented colour and his passion for the contrast of dark and light colours. At once a portraitist, a landscape painter and a painter of vanities, sometimes nostalgic, always visionary, sometimes illusionist, he masters all the genres, which he intermingles with bravado but always with accuracy. An artist as classical as he is contemporary, Ronan Barrot is a standout at a time when art is turning mainly to the conceptual side. He owns the history of art - and his work bears witness to this - right down to its smallest corners. As an artist whose preferred medium, oil, would fit into the category of "figurative" art, he in fact submits to the viewer, through the apparent subject matter of his canvas, a multitude of possibilities of interpretation, to which the terms "realist", "utopian", "surrealist", or even "abstract" could then be applied.
Because he never forgets the homage he owes to the old masters, because he never neglects the mythology on which so many of their works are based and which so many contemporary artists have forgotten today, his work acquires a dimension that is as powerful as it is learned.
